Having sold my IPOD color cause even with wav. files in it it sounds like poo doo my question is...

I want to be able to record cds to minidisc using sonicstage, so I can take advantage of easy track titles etc writing..

but still want to be able to play minidiscs in my old pioneer minidisc seperates unit.

Can this be done? which encoder should I use to make it compatable.

I want to do it at high quality too, I don't mind if I only fit one album to one minidisc.

Also..can you change the genre titles in sonicstage like in itunes?

hi, welcome to MDCF...

yes, just use an 60/74/80 min disc in MD mode... and select a legacy type atrac (LP2 if the pioneer is MDLP or fake SP if it is pre-MDLP)

I want to do it at high quality too, I don't mind if I only fit one album to one minidisc

but there is the problem... all software encoding is LP2 @ max. It offers an SP but it is only disguised LP2 that takes up as much space as real SP but without the sound quality. So for good sound quality, you need to record in SP on the player itself in realtime...

Actually, I think it's even worse...I keep hearing people talk about fake SP as being "disguised" LP2, but that wouldn't make much sense, considering that the block sizes and filterbanks of ATRAC3 are different than ATRAC. Even if you "trick" the player into thinking LP2 and a bunch of padding is SP, it still wouldn't play back. More likely, the software encodes the track to LP2 for dubious reasons (DRM, most likely), then sends the stream to the player, where it is transcoded (not disguised) into regular ATRAC. The fact that most ATRAC DSP chips probably can't do SP encoding faster than maybe 2x also might be the reason why fake-SP encodings are limited to about that speed, despite there being more bandwidth available in USB 1.1.

Thus, my feeling is that "fake SP" is actually worse than LP2: it's LP2, decoded to PCM and then transcoded into SP on the unit itself, which leads to more quantization noise and generational artifacts. Just speculation, of course.....

Oh well looks like i'll keep recording with the seperates unit for now, i'll have to carry around minidiscs but at least i'll have the sound quality.

Till someone invents a good sounding harddisc player I'm not ready to move on.

Just keep making minidiscs that will play SP sony for goodness sake!

HiMD can play HiSP @ 265kbps which sounds very good and even 44.1mHz/16b PCM perhaps you should have a look at the equipment browser @ minidisc.org

Thanks for that I will. Still I'd rather have a decent player with good sound that will play mp3s.

I don't mind mp3 at 192kbps and above as long as there is equipment, pref a harddisc player, that can play them.

But no one has invented a harddisc player that sounds any good yet. boo

Most audiophiles reckon the iPod line out via a dock into an amp is pretty good.

The old pioneer minidisc seperates unit is using SP (292kps). Since you only get 1 album on this at a time you might aswell use a CD Player. Why use the pioneer at all? If you want the same quality as CD but in a MD format you can use PCM on a HiMD portable. Which is the same quality as the CD. SonicStage will also tag all the tracks as you require, and you can copy them via USB to the player instead of using realtime. You can plug the HiMD portable directly into you amp when at home.

Or just use a CD player at home, and the HiMD portable when travelling.

You should check out the portable section on head-fi.org, for more info on getting quality SQ from HD players etc.

To my ears my Zen Micro sounds as good if not better than SP on my old MD units, or HiSP or PCM on my HiMD. Its subjective anyway.
